China launches airship power station: it generates energy at an altitude of 1500 meters

According to Korrespondent.net: The Chinese company Beijing SAWES Energy Technology announced new tests of an innovative wind power station that combines the design of an airship and a wind turbine. This was reported by South China Morning Post. The lightweight helium structure allows the platform to rise to an altitude of 1500 meters, where wind speed is three times higher than at the surface. This makes the project promising for providing electricity to remote areas and disaster zones.

Safe Operation

To ensure safety, a network of weather radars and onboard equipment is used. In the event of dangerous gusts, the system automatically stops the turbines within five minutes. However, the risk of such phenomena is minimal, as winds at high altitudes are more stable and predictable. The use of additional helium retention technology allows the platform to remain in the air for up to 25 years without the need to replace the gas.

Progress of Testing

Previously, SAWES conducted tests at altitudes of 500 and 1000 meters, gradually approaching stratospheric winds. The company believes that with mass production of such installations, which can rise to about 10,000 meters, the technology will be able to compete with traditional energy sources. This will reduce the cost of electricity produced by such installations.

In the fall of 2024, SAWES tested an airship measuring 23×15 meters with a turbine rated at 500 kW. In January 2025, a new prototype measuring 30 meters in length and 15 meters in width ascended to an altitude of 1000 meters with a 100 kW turbine. Currently, the company is preparing to launch the S1500 platform, which will raise a 1 megawatt turbine to 1500 meters. As of today, SAWES has already received orders totaling more than 70 million dollars.

Technological Breakthrough

In the USA, the most powerful similar project was able to raise a wind installation rated at only 30 kW to a height of 297 meters, which is comparable to modern land-based wind turbines. The height of 1000-1500 meters that Chinese engineers are striving for is considered a significant technological breakthrough.

It was previously reported that the Chinese company Envision introduced a unique two-blade wind turbine.
