Free Trade Agreement with Turkey Ratified

According to UATV: On July 14, 2023, Ukraine's parliament, the Verkhovna Rada, formally ratified the free trade agreement with Turkey, marking a pivotal milestone in the bilateral relationship between the two nations. A total of 236 lawmakers voted in favor of the ratification. This decision underscores Ukraine's commitment to deepening economic ties with Turkey and advancing trade cooperation.

The agreement was originally signed in Kyiv back in February 2022, and Turkey's parliament had already given its approval earlier. The pact establishes a free trade zone between Ukraine and Turkey, which is expected to significantly improve business conditions and drive economic growth for both sides.

What the Ratification Means for Bilateral Relations

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha described the agreement as the outcome of years of dedicated and often challenging negotiations. He emphasized that

“this agreement is the result of many years of dedicated and sometimes difficult work, and today’s vote turns our joint efforts into a tangible achievement.”
These remarks highlight the significance of the ratification for the future of Ukraine-Turkey relations.

Turkey’s Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan is scheduled to visit Kyiv on July 15, signaling further steps to strengthen cooperation between the two countries. The ratification opens up new opportunities for businesses in both nations, fostering economic development and boosting trade volumes.

For Ukraine, ratifying the free trade agreement with Turkey is a critical move as it seeks to reinforce its economy amid global challenges. Not only does the deal unlock new markets for Ukrainian goods, but it also encourages Turkish investment, which could lead to job creation. The upcoming visit by Turkey’s top diplomat underscores an intensifying bilateral dialogue and a shared readiness to deepen collaboration—an essential factor for regional stability and economic growth.
