Kremlin Exploits Election Debate to Sow Chaos: Ukraine's Response.
The Situation Regarding Ukrainian Elections
According to UATV: According to political analyst Oleksandr Leonov, Executive Director of the 'Penta' Center for Applied Political Research, the Kremlin is attempting to use the issue of elections in Ukraine to destabilize the situation and prolong peace negotiations. He stresses the critical importance of adhering to Ukrainian laws governing elections. Leonov also underscores the illegitimacy of the current Russian authorities, which calls into question the validity of their actions.
Ukrainian law prohibits holding elections under martial law, casting serious doubt on their feasibility during the ongoing conflict. Oleksandr Leonov notes that
“a ceasefire and the cancellation of martial law are necessary before elections can be held,”highlighting the need for stability in the country to ensure a normal democratic process.
The Legitimacy of Power in Russia
The question of the Russian government's legitimacy has become even more pertinent, given that its most recent elections were conducted in occupied Ukrainian territories. Oleksandr Leonov observes that
“it is difficult to speak of Putin's own legitimacy, not only due to election falsifications but also because the last State Duma elections, like the presidential elections in Russia, were held in part on occupied territories.”This confirms that these occupied territories are not recognized by the international community, further undermining the legitimacy of the Russian government's actions.
Consequently, the situation surrounding elections in Ukraine remains tense, and Kremlin actions could have a destabilizing effect on the peace negotiation process. The necessity of adhering to legality and international norms is becoming increasingly evident in the context of the current conflict.
In the context of the ongoing war in Ukraine, the question of holding elections presents not only a political but also a security challenge. Under martial law, it is crucial that any decisions regarding elections are based on the principles of international law and ensure the participation of all citizens. Given Russia's actions in the occupied territories, the situation becomes even more complex, as the legitimacy of elections in both Ukraine and Russia is called into serious question, demanding careful analysis and an international response. The stability of Ukraine's democratic institutions is a key concern for its Western partners.
