Kyiv Faces an Elevator Crisis: Widespread Failures Feared.
The State of Kyiv's Elevators
According to Novyny.live: Kyiv City Council deputy Andriy Vitrenko has issued a stark warning about the city's elevators, describing the situation as nearly catastrophic. He emphasized that power grid fluctuations could trigger widespread breakdowns. The Troieshchyna district is particularly affected, where 80% of elevators are now in a state of disrepair. Of the 2,000 elevators that were once operational, only 50 remain that are not currently functioning. This infrastructure crisis is a direct consequence of wartime damage to Ukraine's energy grid and years of underinvestment.
Challenges in Achieving Elevator Independence
In November 2025, Oleksii Kucherenko noted that making elevators autonomous during power outages is a complex challenge. Plans for 2026 include addressing the root causes of non-functional elevators. The situation demands an urgent solution to prevent further deterioration of the city's infrastructure.
The elevator problem in Kyiv underscores the critical need for infrastructure reforms to ensure a basic quality of life for the capital's residents. Given that elevators are essential in multi-story buildings, their poor operation severely impacts mobility, especially for the elderly and people with disabilities. Resolving this issue will require concerted efforts from city authorities and likely significant investment in modernizing the elevator system.
