Egypt Bars The Scarlet Lady Cruise Ship, Forcing an Unexpected Route Change.
Scarlet Lady Cruise Ship Forced to Alter Its Itinerary
According to Tourism.d.ua — Туризм: Passengers aboard the cruise liner The Scarlet Lady were caught off guard after Egypt denied the vessel entry into its territorial waters. In response to this refusal, the ship has rerouted to Montenegro, specifically heading toward the coastal town of Kotor. This incident highlights how quickly geopolitical factors can disrupt even well-laid travel plans in the Mediterranean region.
The Scarlet Lady, which set sail on July 5, had originally scheduled a stop in Alexandria, Egypt. However, roughly 2,000 passengers were informed of the cancellation that morning, leading to widespread disappointment. Among those on board, approximately 1,100 are U.S. citizens. Virgin Voyages expressed their frustration, stating,
“we were extremely disappointed by the decision of the Egyptian authorities.”
How Political Decisions Are Reshaping International Cruises
Rich Campbell noted that this development came as a shock both to the company and to travelers. Interestingly, a similar cruise operated by Atlantis Events proceeded without any issues last year. Randy Slovachek, a representative from Atlantis Events, remarked that
“in 36 years of operation, Atlantis Events has never faced a port denial.”Additionally, during the 'Athens to Venice' itinerary, Turkey also refused to accommodate the ship, citing passenger behavior as the reason.
The Scarlet Lady's itinerary includes stops in several countries, with passengers hailing from the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia, and Canada. Rather than visiting Egypt as planned, the ship will now sail to Montenegro, marking a new chapter in the journey for thousands of travelers.
This situation underscores the growing complexity within the international cruise industry, where political decisions can upend the plans of millions of tourists. Egypt's refusal to accept the vessel may stem from various factors, including security concerns or specific policies toward cruise operators. While Montenegro offers an alternative destination, many passengers remain dissatisfied, given their hopes of exploring Egypt's historic landmarks.
