Kubilius Calls Ukraine's Military Europe's Finest: What This Means for Continental Defense.
Andrius Kubilius Addresses NATO Parliamentary Assembly
According to Espreso.tv: On June 1, former Lithuanian Prime Minister Andrius Kubilius delivered a speech to the NATO Parliamentary Assembly in Vilnius, emphasizing the critical need to integrate Ukraine into Europe's security framework. He urged a serious discussion on the future of European defense architecture, stating bluntly that Ukraine now possesses the most powerful military on the continent. Kubilius also highlighted a staggering fact: since 2022, Ukraine has multiplied its defense production by a factor of 50. Today, the country's defense industry can match the annual output of Germany or France.
Kubilius sounded a stark warning, declaring that
“Russia still produces more than the European Union, and this is extremely dangerous.”He challenged national parliaments to demand answers from their governments, asking:
“why are our defense industries not scaling up, despite increased funding?”According to him, Ukraine thrives on 'fierce competition, market-driven rules, and dynamic innovation in the defense sector.' In contrast, he pointed out that Europe lacks a unified defense market, healthy competition, robust innovation, and the necessary industrial ramp-up.
The Case for Ukraine's Membership in the European Defense Union
Kubilius further argued for advancing Ukraine's membership in the European Defense Union, viewing it as an essential step to bolster security across the continent.
His remarks underscore the pressing need to rethink Europe's security strategies, especially amid rising threats from Russia. Integrating Ukraine into the European defense system could be the key to strengthening collective security, as the country's military capabilities have shown remarkable progress. Given the absence of a single defense market in Europe, Kubilius's comments also cast doubt on the effectiveness of existing cooperation mechanisms among EU member states.
