Twin Study Reveals Smoking Ages Skin by a Decade.
How Smoking and Sun Exposure Impact Skin Aging
According to TSN.ua: A study published in PubMed used identical twins to investigate the effects of smoking and sun exposure on skin appearance, revealing dramatic differences between smokers and non-smokers. The research was led by scientist Bahman Guyuron, who emphasized the significance of the findings. This type of twin study is particularly powerful as it controls for genetic factors, isolating the impact of lifestyle choices.
Comparing the Participants
One participant, Brenda, smoked half a pack of cigarettes daily for 14 years and spent about 14 hours per week in the sun for 30 years. In contrast, her twin sister Barb never smoked and limited her sun exposure to just two hours weekly. This stark contrast provided a clear basis for comparison, with another twin, Jeanne, stating that Brenda looked a full 10 years older.
- Another pair, Susan (a smoker for 16 years) and Jeanne, showed an even greater disparity, with Susan appearing 11.25 years older.
- These findings strongly indicate that the combination of smoking and significant sun exposure can substantially accelerate visible aging.
This research validates some of the beliefs that were considered most scientific.

The researcher further observed:
When I see it in patients, I don't need to ask if they smoke. I know they do.
Consequently, the study confirms a clear link between smoking, sun exposure, and premature skin aging, highlighting the importance of caution regarding these factors in daily life. These results provide medical professionals with compelling, visual evidence to raise public awareness about the tangible risks associated with smoking and excessive sun exposure, making it a valuable tool for promoting healthier lifestyle choices.
