Latvia to Acquire 18 Swedish Archer Howitzers, Forming Joint Unit with Sweden.
Acquisition of Swedish Archer Howitzers
According to UATV: The Latvian government has approved a plan to purchase 18 Swedish-made Archer self-propelled howitzers for its armed forces, with deliveries set to begin in 2026. This procurement represents a significant step in strengthening Latvia's defense capabilities, as noted by Andris Sprūds. In a move highlighting deepening military ties, Latvia and Sweden will establish a joint Archer artillery unit dedicated to training personnel on the operation of these advanced systems.
Future Plans and Strategic Context
Joint training exercises utilizing the Archer platforms are scheduled to commence in 2026. This initiative builds upon a letter of intent signed between Riga and Stockholm in June of last year, underscoring the close defense cooperation between the two nations. Latvia's defense budget for 2026 is set at 4.91% of GDP, equivalent to 2.16 billion euros (2.51 billion dollars), reflecting a substantial national commitment to security. This level of military spending is among the highest in NATO, demonstrating Latvia's proactive stance on regional defense.
This initiative is part of a broader trend among Baltic and Eastern European nations to bolster their defensive capabilities in response to heightened regional security threats. The partnership with Sweden, a country that is also actively modernizing its own armed forces, highlights a strategic alliance that is expected to enhance the security of both states.
Latvia continues to work diligently on improving its military readiness, a crucial factor for maintaining stability in the Baltic region.
