Ukraine's Foreign Ministry Condemns Lavrov's Renewed Push for Donbas 'Self-Determination'.
Ukraine's Response to Lavrov's Remarks
According to TSN.ua: In a sharp rebuttal, Ukrainian Foreign Ministry spokesman Georgiy Tykhyi responded to Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov's renewed promotion of the concept of Donbas 'self-determination.' Tykhyi pointed out that the international community has already clearly rejected Russia's territorial claims. He specifically cited the October 2022 United Nations General Assembly vote, where 143 nations condemned Russia's illegal seizure of Ukrainian territory.
Georgiy Tykhyi stressed that international law clearly defines the global stance on such actions. He stated:
“Someone should explain to these idiots that the UN has already answered: in October 2022, 143 countries of the UN General Assembly rejected Russia's illegal seizure of foreign territories.” - Georgiy Tykhyi
This statement was a direct reaction to Lavrov's recent comments, which provoked outrage among Ukrainian officials. The ongoing war in eastern Ukraine, which began in 2014, forms the critical backdrop to this diplomatic exchange.
Upholding International Norms
Consequently, Ukraine continues to insist on upholding international norms and principles that prohibit the forceful alteration of borders. It highlights the concrete steps already taken by the global community in this direction.
This situation underscores the persistent conflict between Ukraine and Russia over territorial integrity and international recognition. Statements from Ukrainian officials aim to bolster international solidarity in confronting aggression, which is crucial for the ongoing diplomatic struggle to restore Ukraine's sovereignty. The UN General Assembly's decision, which rejected Russia's actions, serves as a vital precedent for international policy and law concerning human rights and the territorial integrity of states.
