According to Korrespondent.net: At CES 2026 in Las Vegas, LEGO introduced a new platform called Smart Play, designed in the shape of a standard 2x4 brick but containing a fully-fledged microcomputer inside. The so-called Smart Brick combines computing power, sensors, sound, wireless communication, and a battery, allowing it to easily integrate into any model of the construction set.

The interior of the brick contains a specially designed ASIC chip measuring 4.1 mm, which is responsible for the operation of sensors, RGB LEDs, a small speaker, and a radio module. Power is supplied by a built-in battery that supports wireless inductive charging, meaning the brick can be recharged even when it is completely 'hidden' in the construction set's structure.

Among the key features of the Smart Brick is its ability to 'understand' its surroundings. Instead of cameras or optical sensors, LEGO uses magnetic near-field technology. Smart Tags with unique identifiers are embedded in specially designed tiles and minifigures, which are read by coils inside the brick. This technology allows for determining the distance and orientation between multiple Smart Bricks, forming a low-latency wireless network called BrickNet. This creates the possibility for models to 'interact' with each other without the need for a smartphone or external controller.

Sound effects on the platform are implemented in an original way. LEGO does not store large audio files; instead, the Smart Brick synthesizes sound effects in real time, adjusting frequency and amplitudes of base signals. This allows for the creation of various sound effects without the need for large amounts of memory and without regular firmware updates.

During the launch, the Smart Brick will be available in three LEGO Star Wars sets, containing between 473 and 962 pieces. Prices for the sets range from 70 to 160 US dollars. The brick will handle music, sound effects, and the interactive behavior of models depending on user interaction. The official launch is scheduled for March 1.

This innovation could change the perception of traditional LEGO, introducing elements of interactivity and technology into the games. The Smart Brick opens up new possibilities for creativity and entertainment, sparking interest among both children and adult fans of the construction set worldwide.
