EU leaders urged Trump to defend Ukraine's interests during negotiations with Putin. They signed a joint statement addressed to the American president.
The statement was published on the official government website of the United Kingdom.
What the statement to Trump is about
In the joint statement, the heads of state emphasized that any dialogue with Russia is only possible on the condition of a ceasefire and the assurance of key security interests for Ukraine and Europe.
They stressed the necessity of providing Ukraine with reliable and effective security guarantees that would allow it to effectively defend its sovereignty and territorial integrity.
EU leaders also reaffirmed their unwavering support for Ukraine and stated that any substantial negotiations can only begin after a ceasefire or a significant reduction in the intensity of hostilities.
It was emphasized that peace in Ukraine is impossible without Ukraine's participation itself. International borders cannot be changed by force, and the current frontline should be the starting point for any negotiations.
The joint statement was signed by: President of France Emmanuel Macron, Prime Minister of Italy Giorgia Meloni, Chancellor of Germany Friedrich Merz, Prime Minister of Poland Donald Tusk, Prime Minister of the United Kingdom Keir Starmer, President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen, and President of Finland Alexander Stubb.
