The girl was taken from her parents, who were arrested. This information was reported by the Brazilian news agency Universo Online.
Law enforcement arrived at a house in Sorocaba, São Paulo State, to verify the living conditions of the child.
What they found was shocking: the girl was locked in a dark, filthy room where, according to investigators, she spent her whole life.
Photos showed dirty walls with the outline of the girl's back and her only friend - a sad teddy bear.
She had never attended school, and the police found that the girl was deprived of all vaccinations.
What is most striking is that she never learned to speak.
Child psychologist Ligia Guerra noted: “The girl was very apathetic and shocked by everything.”
Guerra also noted that the girl's hair looked 'tangled' and appeared never to have been washed.
She also emphasized that the girl had not eaten any food that day, and police confirmed she was fed only liquid products.
After her rescue, the girl was sent to the hospital for medical examination and then transferred to a children's home.
Her parents were arrested and charged with unlawful confinement. They currently remain in custody.
According to police chief Renata Zanini, the mother “cannot comprehend the seriousness of the situation.”
She also added that the mother “gave evasive answers” during the interrogation and “showed no remorse.”
This tragedy reminds one of the case of three brothers in Spain, whose parents were arrested on suspicion of child abuse.
Three boys, two of whom were eight-year-old twins, were found in horrific conditions, forced to wear three masks on their faces and sleep in cages.
These cases highlight serious issues in child protection systems across various countries, raising concern among a large section of the public and activists. Both stories indicate an urgent need to improve the flow of information regarding at-risk families and better protect children in such situations.
