According to UATV: In light of Russia's war against Ukraine, Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda has outlined his nation's security efforts, stressing that Lithuania cannot be considered a 'safe island.' Nausėda emphasized that the regional situation remains tense:
“The geopolitical situation is clearly not getting easier; it remains tense.” - Gitanas Nausėda
He argued that claiming Lithuania is a kind of safe haven under these conditions is 'extremely irresponsible.' The President also noted that the military escalation in the Middle East must not divert the international community's attention from Russia's war in Ukraine. This stance reflects the broader security concerns of NATO's eastern flank.
The Critical Need for Regional Security
In his comments, the Lithuanian leader underscored the vital importance of maintaining regional security and reaffirmed Lithuania's readiness to counter external threats.
President Nausėda's statement highlights an alarming reality faced not only by Lithuania but by the wider Eastern European region. The increased military readiness and active threat assessment demonstrate the seriousness with which Lithuanian authorities are approaching security challenges. Within the context of the war in Ukraine and other geopolitical tensions, such remarks are likely to encourage further international cooperation to strengthen regional stability.
