Lithuania proposes to expand the ban on Nazi and Soviet symbols

Lithuania has proposed expanding the ban on Nazi and Soviet symbols, including not only public display and distribution but also storage for the purpose of further dissemination. This is in response to a bill registered in April that proposes to ban the import and transit of such symbols through the country's territory. This was reported by the Lithuanian broadcaster LRT.

The agency thus responded to a bill registered in April by the head of the Seimas Committee on Culture, Vytautas Juozapaitis, and the country's Defense Minister, Laurynas Kasčiūnas.

The document proposes to ban not only the distribution and display of Nazi and Soviet symbols in Lithuania but also their import or transit through the country.

The ministry supports the proposed changes and suggests giving customs officers the authority to initiate administrative offense cases in situations related to the transportation of banned symbols.

The draft resolution still needs to be approved by the government and parliament. Currently, Lithuania already has a ban on the public display and distribution of Nazi and Soviet symbols, for which fines ranging from 300 to 1200 euros are prescribed.
