Shift in Lukashenko’s Rhetoric Toward Ukraine

According to UATV: In a notable change of tone, Alexander Lukashenko has apologized to President Volodymyr Zelenskyy for his earlier remarks and assured that Belarus will not join the war against Ukraine. During a recent speech, Lukashenko emphasized that his country would be 'very vulnerable militarily' if it became involved. This marks a significant shift in the strained relationship between the two neighboring countries.

Andriy Demchenko, spokesperson for Ukraine’s State Border Guard Service, reported that on June 15, some Russian drones entered Ukrainian airspace via Belarus, highlighting ongoing border security concerns. In this context, Lukashenko also stated that

“Belarus is like an open book to the Ukrainian military,”
suggesting a high degree of transparency along the Belarusian-Ukrainian border.

Additionally, Lukashenko urged President Zelenskyy to be more careful with his words, saying that

“Zelenskyy should avoid provoking Belarus.”
These comments reflect Lukashenko’s apparent effort to de-escalate regional tensions, even as Belarus’s foreign policy remains heavily influenced by Russia.

Ukraine Braces for Potential Threats

In response to these developments, Ukraine’s Ground Forces Commander Oleksandr Syrskyi announced that 'defenses along the border with Belarus will be strengthened,' signaling the military’s readiness for any possible threats. Overall, these events underscore the complex dynamics in Ukrainian-Belarusian relations, which continue to be shaped by external factors, particularly Russian actions.

The latest developments suggest that despite the tense situation, Lukashenko is seeking a compromise with Ukraine, possibly to avoid further escalation. At the same time, Ukraine’s reinforcement of border defenses demonstrates its preparedness for potential dangers and reflects its ongoing cautious policy in the region.
