Doctors in Lviv Remove Peach Pit from Patient's Intestine: Initially Mistaken for Gallstone.
Successful Surgery Performed in Lviv
According to TSN.ua: A patient named Hryhorii first sought help at a local hospital, suspecting he had a gallstone. He was subsequently referred to Lviv for further diagnosis. There, doctors successfully extracted a peach pit from his intestine, a foreign object that had caused a partial bowel obstruction. This case highlights how modern diagnostic tools are crucial for identifying unusual causes of abdominal pain.
During an initial endoscopy, what appeared to be a 'gallstone concrement' was detected. To clarify the diagnosis, physicians in Lviv conducted a computed tomography (CT) scan and a follow-up endoscopic procedure. These examinations revealed the true nature of the obstruction and showed the patient had developed mechanical jaundice and cholangitis as a result.
Procedure and Outcome
The surgical team, led by Doctor Nazar Bula, managed to remove the foreign body through the patient's mouth without making any incisions; the entire procedure took less than an hour. Doctor Bula noted that the CT scan showed the 'concrement' had an atypical structure, which prompted the more detailed investigation.
“Thanks to the medical team's swift response, we avoided more serious complications and successfully resolved the patient's problem.” - Nazar Bula
This incident underscores the critical importance of thorough diagnostics and timely intervention in medical practice. The timely detection of atypical objects using modern examination methods like CT scans can significantly influence treatment outcomes and prevent severe complications.
Such cases also serve as a reminder to exercise caution when consuming fruits and other foods that may pose a health risk if not properly prepared or if they are of questionable quality.
