IAEA Finds Damage at Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Plant; Radiation Levels Remain Normal.
Inspection of the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant
According to Novyny.live: The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) conducted an inspection of the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP) following reports of a possible drone strike. During the review, inspectors discovered damage to the facility's external structures, including a compromised metal hatch. They also found debris and remnants of scorched fiber optic cable. Despite these findings, radiation levels at the ZNPP site remain within normal limits, indicating no immediate safety threat.
During the inspection, the IAEA team faced dangerous conditions, forcing them to take cover temporarily due to the sound of drones and gunfire. IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi underscored the severity of the incident, stating:
“Any attacks on nuclear facilities are unacceptable and must cease to prevent the risk of a nuclear accident.” - Rafael Grossi
Significance of the IAEA Mission
This IAEA inspection marks a critical step in ensuring the safety of nuclear sites amid armed conflict. The findings could heavily influence future security decisions regarding the ZNPP. Given the volatile situation surrounding the plant, such missions may prove pivotal for the international community in assessing risks and determining whether additional safety measures are needed in the region.
