The energy crisis in Transnistria may contribute to the reunification of the region with Moldova – Makohon
Serhiy Makohon, former head of 'Gas Transmission Operator of Ukraine', believes that the energy crisis in Transnistria may facilitate the reunification of the region with Moldova. According to him, Russia is trying to escalate the situation, although there are technical possibilities for gas supplies.
According to Makohon, 'Gazprom' could deliver gas to Moldova via the 'Turkish Stream', but Russia was unwilling to do so. He also noted that Transnistria has a huge debt for Russian gas, but Russia is trying to shift it onto Chisinau.
The Political Nature of the Crisis and Attempts to Influence Elections in Moldova – Makohon
Makohon believes that the situation has a political nature and is an attempt by the Kremlin to influence the population of Moldova before the upcoming elections. To improve the humanitarian situation in the region, the expert calls on the separatists of Transnistria to seek assistance from Chisinau and return to the legal realm of Moldova.
Energy Dependency and Socio-Economic Problems
The refusal of Tiraspol to accept help from Moldova demonstrates how energy dependency can lead to socio-economic problems. A similar crisis is also observed in Iran, which emphasizes the importance of energy security.
