Closure of MARKS & Spencer store in Wolverhampton

According to The Sun: MARKS & Spencer has closed its flagship store in the center of Wolverhampton, where it has been operating for 100 years. This event has been a significant blow to the local community.

Upset shoppers expressed their feelings, stating:

“it's just so sad”

The store on Dudley Street had not been meeting expectations, and the closure became inevitable after performance deteriorated due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Despite the efforts of consumers and staff who signed a petition in support of the store, which was joined by over 700 people, its closure has become a reality.

Emotions of employees and shoppers

Sisters Barbara Pugh, 69, and Danuta Prior, 75, came to the store to say goodbye.

Barbara noted:

“We came here since childhood with our mothers, buying clothes and food, and it’s a truly wonderful store, and it will be a great sadness that it will no longer be in Wolverhampton.”

The store has been operating since 1929, which means nearly 100 years of trading.

Barbara added:

“The staff were wonderful — they were always ready to help, and with the closure of Marks and Spencer, Wolverhampton loses an important part.”

Shoppers actively expressed their disappointment on social media. One wrote:

“Kudos to all the staff who worked here over the years. This is undoubtedly a loss for Wolverhampton.”

Comments from management

In his statement, regional manager of MARKS & Spencer, Callum Telford, noted:

“Unfortunately, the store has been showing poor results for a long time and has never recovered after the COVID-19 pandemic.”

Telford added that the company remains committed to Wolverhampton and, along with the city council, is looking for a suitable location for a new store.

This situation comes amid changes in the company's business model aimed at adapting to new market conditions.

Wolverhampton city council member Chris Burden expressed his concern:

“We understand that MARKS & Spencer's decision is driven by changes in market conditions and consumer behavior.”

At the same time, he emphasized that collective efforts will focus on supporting employees affected by the store's closure.

The closure of MARKS & Spencer in Wolverhampton has been a significant event for the community, where for decades this store has been not only a shopping place but also a social hub for residents. While the company seeks new opportunities, the question of the future of workers and the impact on the local economy remains relevant.
