Over 5,500 Attacks on Ukraine's Railways: Damage Estimated in the Hundreds of Billions.
Strikes on Ukraine's Railway Infrastructure
According to Novyny.live: Since the start of the full-scale war, Russian forces have launched more than 5,500 attacks on facilities belonging to Ukraine's state railway company, Ukrzaliznytsia. The resulting destruction is estimated at hundreds of billions of hryvnias, severely disrupting the country's rail operations. For context, Ukraine's rail network is a critical lifeline for both civilian travel and military logistics during the ongoing conflict.
On June 11, a strike on a locomotive depot in the Sumy region killed one female railway worker and wounded four others. Then, on the night of June 14-15, shelling damaged railway infrastructure, causing train delays of three to four hours.
“The damage is measured in tens, if not hundreds, of billions of hryvnias.”
Volodymyr Shemayev
These figures highlight the severity of the situation, as Ukrzaliznytsia's infrastructure forms a vital part of the nation's transport system. The ongoing attacks threaten not only the economy but also public safety.
The relentless shelling of railway assets is causing massive financial losses while creating major obstacles for passenger and freight services. This disruption could hinder the supply of goods and the movement of people. In wartime, rail transport remains a key logistical backbone, so damage to it may further destabilize Ukraine's overall economic resilience.
