Russia struck Ukraine with 277 missiles and drones: Zelensky called for a global reaction

According to ТСН: On the night of January 8-9, Russia attacked Ukraine, launching 242 drones, 22 cruise missiles, and 13 ballistic missiles aimed at energy facilities and civilian infrastructure. Among the missiles was one medium-range missile – the Oreshnik. Four people were killed in the attack.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky noted that this military aggression occurred amid significant cold temperatures, particularly affecting civilians. He emphasized that in Kyiv, a repeat strike on a residential building took place while emergency services were already providing assistance after the first shelling.

A drone also damaged the building of the Qatari embassy. The president stressed that this country is actively mediating with Russia regarding the release of prisoners of war and civilians held in Russian jails.

“The world needs to respond clearly. Primarily the USA, which Russia truly takes into account. The Russian Federation must receive signals that it is their duty to focus on diplomacy and feel the consequences every time it refocuses on killings and the destruction of infrastructure. Today’s strike loudly reminds all our partners that the supply of air defense systems for Ukraine is an ongoing priority. No day should be lost in supplies, production, or agreements,” said the head of state.

Night attack by the Russian Federation

Throughout the evening of January 8 and the night, Russia launched strikes on Ukraine, using several types of missiles and hundreds of drones. At the end of the night, the Russians launched a medium-range ballistic missile from the Kapustin Yar testing ground in the Astrakhan region towards Lviv region.

Air Force representative Yuri Ihnat noted that the ballistic attack was aimed at causing panic among Ukrainians and intimidating the West by demonstrating Russia's ability to strike near NATO borders.

Moscow confirmed the use of the Oreshnik missile in this attack, claiming it was a response to an alleged “attack” by drones on Vladimir Putin’s residence. The Russian Ministry of Defense also reported hitting drone production facilities of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and energy facilities.

This attack marked another escalation of military actions between Russia and Ukraine, demonstrating not only the growing aggression from Moscow but also the importance of international support in protecting Ukraine. Partner countries should take these events into account in the context of military and diplomatic efforts, as the situation remains tense.
