First time recording a white albino monkey: a unique discovery in Brazil.
According to ТСН: Brazilian researchers, thanks to 4K drones, have discovered a unique phenomenon — a completely white titi monkey with red eyes. This is only the third confirmed case of albinism among primates in Brazil, which has sparked lively discussions in the scientific community.
Scientists first recorded a titi monkey with pure white fur and red eyes, which are characteristic signs of albinism. Unique images were captured using a DJI Mavic drone equipped with infrared sensors and a 4K camera.
The causes of albinism in this individual remain unclear; however, researchers note that the primate does not show significant difficulties associated with its unusual color.
This case is the 15th documented occurrence of pigmentation anomalies in non-human primates in Brazil and the third case of albinism overall. Previously, similar cases were recorded only among capuchin monkeys (Cebidae), whereas this case is the first recorded in a member of the Pitheciidae family.
Observations took place in one of the largest remnants of the Atlantic forest — an ecosystem of humid tropical forests in eastern Brazil that has undergone significant fragmentation due to logging and agricultural expansion.
In November 2024, scientists recorded video of a black-fronted titi (Callicebus nigrifrons) that lacked pigmentation, including on its palms, soles, and areas around the eyes, which usually have dark coloring. Two other individuals with standard fur color were nearby and showed no aggression toward the albino. Researchers believe that the unusual coloring may have arisen from a combination of genetic factors and environmental influences, notably due to the reduction of habitat and population numbers caused by the destruction of the Atlantic forest.
Other cases of animals with unusual coloring
In 2023, an albino puma was born in a Nicaragua zoo with white fur instead of the usual reddish spotted coloring.
That same year, the first albino giant anteater that approached sexual maturity was recorded in Brazil.
Researchers off the coast of Albania observed a white-skinned bull shark — in this case, it was not about albinism, but a genetic anomaly known as leucism.
In Antarctica, a skipper penguin with black plumage and white spots was observed, although these birds typically have a black back and a white belly.
It is worth noting that near Costa Rica, scientists first discovered a unique six-foot nurse shark with bright orange skin and white eyes. Such coloring is caused by xanthism combined with signs of albinism — anomalies that had not previously been documented in cartilaginous fish of the Caribbean.
This case has found its place in numerous scientific works, as it emphasizes the importance of studying genetic anomalies in the animal kingdom. Albinism in primates is a complex phenomenon that requires further research, as documented cases may help to understand the mechanisms behind such changes.
