New MGU9 Pickup for Australia: Independent Suspension and Electric Tailgate

According to Korrespondent.net: The Australian market for mid-size pickups has been joined by a new model - the company MG has introduced its first pickup, the MGU9, for the country. Although this is not the brand's first entry into this segment on the world stage, this model will be the first to appear at local dealers with the MG logo.

Features and Design of MGU9

The MGU9 is based on the Chinese Maxus/LDV Terron 9, but has several important differences in design and functionality. Visually, the vehicle has received a new grille with additional chrome elements, an updated bumper, and a unique class option - an electric tailgate with a built-in step and cup holders.

Comfort and Technology

The flagship Explore Pro trim is equipped with the MG Smart Hatch system, which allows for increased cargo space thanks to a folding partition and a retractable rear window. The interior design includes a digital dashboard with two 12.3-inch displays, leather upholstery, a panoramic roof, and seats with heating, ventilation, and massage functions.

Technical Specifications

MG emphasizes that the model is specifically adapted for Australian conditions: instead of conventional leaf springs on the rear axle, an independent multi-link suspension is used, improving comfort and handling.

Under the hood, there is a 2.5-liter turbo-diesel SAIC engine with a power output of 215 hp and 520 Nm, paired with an 8-speed automatic ZF and a BorgWarner all-wheel drive system. The pickup is capable of towing up to 3.5 tons and can carry a load ranging from 770 to 870 kg.

Price and Expectations

Prices for the vehicle start from AUD 52,990 (approximately USD 34,900) for the base Explore version and go up to AUD 60,990 (USD 40,200) for Explore Pro.

First customers will be able to receive their vehicles by the end of 2025.

It is worth noting that earlier reports indicated Toyota is preparing a compact pickup that will debut in 2027.
