However, the 36-year-old athlete is currently struggling: he is separating from his wife Daphne after 11 years of marriage, while his father Henry is battling cancer.

Despite the difficult year, the Dutch star remains confident in his determination to compete for major titles against Luke Littler and Luke Humphries.

“Yes, 100 percent, without a doubt,” he admits, speaking about the most challenging phase of his life.

“My father is okay, he has been receiving radiation therapy for seven weeks and probably chemotherapy. I hope everything will be fine afterwards.”

Van Gerwen also admitted that he is still facing many challenges. When speaking about his mental state, he added: “Not yet. I am in the divorce process, I sometimes spend time with the kids. Everything is different now.”

“I need to find a new routine. Of course, it will take a few months before I feel 100 percent again.”

“Tournaments have become tougher, you have to invest time and get back into training. I need to find a solution for my private life.”

Van Gerwen, who plays against Dirk van Duijvenbode on Tuesday, recently attended the Tomorrowland festival in Ibiza, where he got into a dispute with a shawarma vendor – this caused quite a stir on social media.

However, he noted: “Sometimes you have to take a break and relax, change the environment. I was in Ibiza with the kids and then alone. I attended Tomorrowland and did many nice things.”

“Now I have to play darts and train, return to my habits.”

“I have never been in such a situation. I was with my wife for seventeen and a half years. It is a new life for me now.”

Despite everything, Van Gerwen is confident that he will soon return to his best form to challenge the dominant Lukes once again.

“Of course, losses are unpleasant, but they also shape you as a player. I know what I am capable of, and everyone else does too.”

Michael van Gerwen will compete from October 6 to 12 at the BOYLE Sports World Grand Prix in Leicester.

Alamy Van Gerwen faces significant personal challenges in his life, but his desire to continue competing remains unbroken. Despite the tough times, he is determined to return to his best form to compete at the highest level once again. This underscores not only his professional commitment but also his personal efforts to overcome difficulties.
