Ukraine’s Culture Minister Urges UNESCO to Name Russia as Perpetrator of Heritage Attacks.
Call to UNESCO
According to Novyny.live: On June 16, Ukraine’s Minister of Culture Tetiana Berezhna called on UNESCO to explicitly identify Russia as the party responsible for assaults that have damaged the country’s cultural heritage. This appeal came just one day after Russian forces struck the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra on June 15, causing significant destruction. The attack on the historic monastery, a UNESCO World Heritage site, has intensified concerns over the protection of cultural landmarks amid the ongoing war.
In response, UNESCO representatives visited the damaged site and documented the harm inflicted. The organization also expressed readiness to provide urgent assistance to the Ukrainian government in restoring its cultural heritage. However, Berezhna criticized UNESCO’s initial statement, noting that it was 'filled with impersonal verbs,' and stressed the need for the international body to take a more definitive stance.
'We all know Russia did this, so we really want UNESCO, as an international organization, to learn to call things by their real names.' Tetiana Berezhna
To support the recovery of cultural heritage in Ukraine, the Ukrainian Cultural Heritage Restoration Fund has been established, aiming to preserve and restore damaged cultural sites.
The Importance of International Support
Berezhna’s call to UNESCO underscores the critical need for international backing and the clear attribution of blame for the destruction of Ukraine’s cultural heritage during modern armed conflicts. This incident highlights the pressing challenges Ukraine faces in safeguarding its historical and cultural legacy, as well as the demand for more decisive action from global organizations to protect cultural treasures in conflict zones.
