After Russian Drone Strike, Minister Klimenko Rushes to Rescue Ancient Icons from Assumption Cathedral.
Rescuing Cultural Heritage
According to Novyny.live: Ukraine's Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko personally took part in saving centuries-old icons and relics from the Assumption Cathedral following a Russian attack. A drone strike ignited a fire, prompting an immediate response from emergency crews and church officials. In the moments after the impact, Klymenko worked alongside reserve staff, priests, a bishop, and police officers to carry artifacts out of the cathedral. Their coordinated efforts ensured that rare 17th- and 18th-century icons were evacuated with minimal damage.
The Fire and Its Aftermath
Twenty fire trucks from the State Emergency Service arrived at the scene. Fighting the blaze proved challenging due to flames spreading beneath the cathedral's copper roofing. Notably, the southern section of the church survived even the destruction of World War II, underscoring the significance of its preservation today.
In response to the incident, Andrii Sybiha announced urgent procedures with UNESCO aimed at protecting cultural heritage. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy also traveled to the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra to assess the situation firsthand and offer his support. These developments highlight the ongoing struggle to safeguard historical landmarks amid active warfare.
This event and its aftermath underscore the vital role cultural heritage plays in a nation's identity, especially during armed conflict. Preserving monuments like the Assumption Cathedral matters not only historically but also morally, as they embody the heritage and culture that adversaries seek to erase.
