Italian Defense Minister: Only the Aggressor Can End the War in Ukraine.
Italian Defense Minister's Remarks on the Ukraine War
According to TSN.ua: Italian Defense Minister Guido Crosetto has stated that only the party who initiated the conflict can bring the war in Ukraine to an end. He emphasized that Italy, Ukraine, Europe, and NATO were not the instigators of this aggression. Crosetto noted that the war, ongoing since 2022, has resulted in devastating losses, including thousands of deaths each day. His comments come amid ongoing Western debates about the level and nature of support for Kyiv.
The minister offered a pessimistic assessment of Ukraine's prospects, declaring:
“Ukraine cannot and will never win this war. Ukraine is trying to survive.” - Guido Crosetto
These remarks underscore the grim reality of the situation and the immense challenges Ukraine faces in defending its territorial integrity, with approximately 1.5% of its territory currently under occupation.
A Call for a New Security Framework
Crosetto stressed the urgent need to establish a security system for Ukraine, one that could function similarly to NATO's Article 5 collective defense clause. He suggested such a mechanism could become a primary instrument for providing future security guarantees.
The Italian Defense Minister's comments highlight a critical perspective within the Western alliance regarding the Ukraine conflict. As a key NATO member, Italy plays a significant role in shaping European security policy and supporting Ukraine. These views may influence future decisions on military and humanitarian aid to Ukraine, as well as NATO's strategic planning in response to the ongoing aggression. The development of a robust security framework is seen by many as a potential cornerstone for ensuring long-term stability in the region.
