Ghana's Foreign Minister Visits Ukraine, Addressing African Mercenaries in Russian Ranks.
Ghana's Foreign Minister Makes First Visit to Ukraine
According to UATV: On February 25, 2023, Ghana's Foreign Minister, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, made his inaugural visit to Ukraine. During the trip, he held talks with his Ukrainian counterpart, Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha. The primary focus of their meeting was to explore enhanced cooperation in economic ties, agricultural partnership, education, and defense industries between the two nations.
Outlining Ukraine's perspective on collaboration, Andrii Sybiha stated:
“Ukraine is prepared to remain a reliable supplier of agricultural products and is interested in joint value-added projects, particularly in processing and logistics.”This signals Ukraine's intent to deepen relations with African nations, including Ghana, within the agricultural sector. This diplomatic outreach is part of Ukraine's broader effort to build international support and economic resilience.
The Issue of Ghanaian and African Citizens
A significant portion of the discussions was dedicated to the situation involving citizens from Ghana and other African countries who are fighting on Russia's side. According to Ukrainian intelligence, over 1,780 individuals from the African continent are currently serving in the Russian army, with participants hailing from 36 different African nations. Specifically, Kenya's National Intelligence Service has reported that approximately one thousand Kenyan citizens have been recruited to fight against Ukraine.
Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa emphasized the official position, stating:
“We would like to state clearly that they received no permission from Ghana, or from African countries. They have become victims of manipulation, disinformation, and false narratives.”These remarks underscore the government's profound concern for its citizens who have been placed in a dangerous situation through deceptive means.
The visit by Ghana's top diplomat marks a pivotal step in advancing bilateral relations, demonstrating a mutual interest in multifaceted cooperation and a willingness to address complex security and humanitarian issues. It highlights Ukraine's growing diplomatic engagement with African states, which could unlock new avenues for economic partnership. Given the ongoing conflict, discussions on security and the involvement of foreign fighters are critical factors that will likely shape future relations between Ukraine, Ghana, and other nations on the continent.
