Abu Dhabi Hosts Prisoner Swap Deal Between Ukraine and Russia.
Ukraine and Russia Agree to Exchange 314 Prisoners in Abu Dhabi Talks
According to TSN.ua: A new round of peace talks on the war in Ukraine, held in Abu Dhabi, has yielded a significant agreement for a prisoner exchange involving 314 individuals. U.S. Special Envoy Steve Witkoff reported that the negotiations, which saw some progress, were successfully facilitated by the United Arab Emirates. This development comes amid ongoing international efforts to find a diplomatic resolution to the conflict that began with Russia's full-scale invasion in February 2022.
The United States expressed gratitude to the UAE for organizing the discussions. During the meetings, however, Russia introduced a new condition demanding international recognition of the Donbas region as Russian territory. Secretary of State Marco Rubio noted that the status of the Donetsk region has now become the sole remaining major point of contention in the peace negotiations.
"Sustained diplomatic engagement is producing tangible results and advancing efforts to end the war in Ukraine." - Steve Witkoff
Despite the persisting disagreements, this round of talks is viewed as a crucial step toward achieving peace. The prisoner swap could serve as a foundation for future compromises and underscores the vital role of international support in the peace process.
- The recognition of the Donetsk region as Russian territory remains the pivotal unresolved issue.
- Resolving this point will require considerable additional effort from all parties involved.
