Peacekeepers in Ukraine are possible despite Russia's position - former head of NATO Strategic Planning Staff.
European peacekeepers can be deployed on the territory of Ukraine, regardless of Russia's wishes, if they are planned and ready for decisive action. This was stated by the former head of NATO's Strategic Planning Staff, Stephanie Babst.
'The first important step is to define the right mission for such an operation. The second is to allocate military capabilities and forces. But overall I think this is possible,' said the expert.
Babst, who has 22 years of experience in NATO's international structures, stressed that planning such a complex military operation is very demanding. The troops must be powerful enough to stop Russian attacks on Ukraine.
'And they must be ready, if necessary, to fight against Russia,' added Babst.
According to the political scientist, today's NATO is not a suitable option for these goals, it is necessary to form a 'coalition of the willing.' Russians will likely protest against peacekeepers from NATO member countries, but this should not hinder progress. Ukraine's security can only be ensured when the West sends a strong deterrence signal to Moscow: 'red light, stop here,' the expert noted.
