Over 15 Million Hryvnias Allocated to Rebuild the Zatoka Bridge by End of 2026.
Reconstruction of the Bridge Over the Dniester Estuary
According to Novyny.live: Authorities plan to complete the restoration of the combined road-and-rail bridge crossing the Dniester Estuary in Zatoka by the end of 2026. Funding for the project amounts to more than 15 million hryvnias, specifically 15,783,369 hryvnias. This infrastructure suffered extensive damage from Russian missile strikes that began shortly after the full-scale invasion, making reconstruction a priority.
The first attacks on the bridge occurred in late April 2022, when Russian forces targeted the structure. On April 26 of that year, a partial attempt was made to restore traffic after the strike, but the situation remained precarious. In February 2023, the bridge was hit again, this time by a naval kamikaze drone. Despite the destruction, the bridge continued to be a target for the enemy, underscoring its strategic importance.
Challenges in the Restoration Process
In late October 2024, Russian forces launched a combined attack on the bridge, further complicating repair efforts. Nevertheless, work is expected to be finished by December 31, 2026. It is worth noting that the bridge serves not only as a transport link but also forms part of the N-33 highway connecting Odesa, Bilhorod-Dnistrovskyi, Monashi, and the M-15 route, while also being a segment of the Karolino-Buhaz–Buhaz railway line. Restoring this facility is a crucial step toward ensuring the uninterrupted operation of the region's transport network.
Rebuilding the Dniester Estuary bridge is vital for transportation access in southern Ukraine, as it connects key populated areas with major highways. Completing the work by 2026 could positively impact the local economy, aiding in infrastructure recovery and development. This project also highlights Ukraine's ongoing efforts to rebuild damaged infrastructure amid the war.
