IOC Clears Russian and Belarusian Athletes for 2026 Olympics, Drawing Ukrainian Condemnation.
Russian and Belarusian Athletes Approved for 2026 Games
According to UATV: The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has granted Russian and Belarusian athletes permission to compete at the 2026 Winter Olympics, a decision that has sparked significant debate in Ukraine amidst the ongoing war. The Games will be hosted in Italy, and the IOC has already compiled a list of 20 athletes invited to participate in Milan and Cortina d'Ampezzo. Of these 20 athletes, 13 are from Russia and 7 are from Belarus.
Ukrainian Response to the IOC Decision
The reaction to this ruling has been mixed. The Ukrainian Athletics Federation has stated that as long as the war in Ukraine continues, Russian and Belarusian athletes should not be permitted in international competitions. Olympic champion Zhan Beleniuk voiced his perspective on the situation, asserting that
"neutrality is an absolute fake."
He added that he had seen video footage of Belarusian athletes returning to the airport after the European Championships, which further reinforced his stance. This decision by the IOC highlights the persistent and difficult intersection of global sports and geopolitics.
The inclusion of Russian and Belarusian competitors in the 2026 Olympics underscores the complex relationship between sports and politics, particularly during an active military conflict. For many Ukrainians, the participation of these athletes in international events is unacceptable, as it is perceived as legitimizing the aggression by Russia and Belarus. At a time when the country is fighting for its sovereignty, such IOC rulings can generate increased societal tension and outrage, potentially affecting future international relations within the sporting world.
