January 2026's Deep Freeze to Drive Up Heating Wood Prices.
Heating Costs Set to Climb as January 2026 Frosts Bite
According to Novyny.live: Severe frosts forecast for January 2026 in Ukraine are expected to trigger a sharp rise in demand for firewood, leading to a significant price increase for this heating fuel. As temperatures plummet, many households turn to more affordable fuel sources, directly impacting market costs. Energy experts, including Mykola Kovalenko, project that firewood prices for consumers could surge by 10-25% compared to autumn levels.
The intense cold drives higher demand for wood, as it remains a primary heating source for many. For context, the current market price for coal ranges from 9,000 to 11,000 hryvnias per ton, while wood pellets cost approximately 7,500 to 8,500 hryvnias per ton. Heating briquettes are priced between 6,000 and 10,100 hryvnias per ton, and sunflower husk pellets, another alternative, are available for 4,100 to 6,500 hryvnias per ton.
Bracing for the Price Hike
Given the forecasted cold spell, consumers should prepare for rising firewood costs. Mykola Kovalenko, an energy sector expert, explains the direct link:
“Firewood prices for the population will rise by 10-25% compared to autumn figures precisely because of the prolonged frosts.” - Mykola Kovalenko
Consequently, households relying on wood for heat must account for these new market trends in their budgets.
This price increase during a deep freeze could substantially strain the finances of households dependent on this fuel. With the cost of alternative fuels also remaining high, consumers may need to consider implementing energy-efficient measures or exploring other heating sources. Such steps could help mitigate heating expenses amid the volatile energy market, a common challenge in regions with harsh winters.
