The winter census of wild animals is being conducted in a new way

Every year, a winter census of wild animals takes place, as reported by the Central-Western Interregional Forestry and Hunting Management.

Representatives of hunting grounds, hunters, agricultural agencies, ecological and environmental organizations, as well as the Main Department of the State Service of Ukraine on Food Safety and Consumer Protection are involved in counting the animals.

”Data obtained during the accounting of hunting animals help identify which species to focus on to increase their numbers. We also receive information about the density of predators such as wolves and foxes, which are significantly increasing. Based on the collected data, limits for hunting and hunting regulations are planned to be developed for the hunting season of 2025-2026“, - said LMG Valentyn Pastukh.

Due to the lack of snow, the accounting will be conducted by surveying local foresters and accounting at feeding sites, as well as using photo traps. The census is planned to be completed by February 20.

“Foresters of the Vinnytsia forestry will tell how many European bison live within the forest land by the end of this week. This area has the largest population of red-listed European bison in Ukraine”, - the report added.

The area of hunting grounds in Vinnytsia region is 2 million 135.4 thousand hectares. According to the management, the population of wild animals has increased in the forests during the state of war.
