Ukraine's National Bank to Issue New 200-Hryvnia Note Featuring Patriotic Slogan.
Ukraine's Banknotes Get an Update
According to TSN.ua: The National Bank of Ukraine has announced that updated 200-hryvnia banknotes will enter circulation on February 25, 2026. The reverse side of the new note will feature the national slogan "Glory to Ukraine! Glory to the Heroes!". This move is part of an ongoing initiative to incorporate patriotic elements into the design of Ukrainian currency, a process that began in August 2024. This update reflects a broader trend of reinforcing national symbols during a period of heightened sovereignty.
According to the National Bank, the design and security features of the updated 200-hryvnia note will match the 2019 model. As part of this same modernization program, new banknotes of other denominations have already been or will be released:
- 500 hryvnias from August 8, 2024;
- 1000 hryvnias from August 8, 2024;
- 50 hryvnias from August 23, 2024;
- 20 hryvnias from August 21, 2025.
The release date for an updated 100-hryvnia note will be announced at a later time.
The National Bank clarified that there is no need for a special exchange of older 200-hryvnia notes for the new ones. This means previous versions remain legal tender and will circulate alongside the updated design. Concurrently, the bank plans to phase out smaller denomination paper money, signaling a gradual modernization of Ukraine's cash system.
A Strategy for Modernizing Currency Circulation
The banknote refresh is part of a wider National Bank strategy aimed at improving the design and security features of currency. The introduction of patriotic elements also mirrors current socio-political sentiments within the country, serving to underscore national identity during a defining historical period.
Allowing old and new notes to circulate in parallel will provide flexibility during the transition, which can help maintain public confidence in the monetary system. Therefore, this modernization of currency reflects not just technical upgrades, but also significant cultural shifts within Ukraine.
