Tesla loses its leadership: Volkswagen topped the sales rankings for electric cars in Europe.
In Europe, 6,800,000 cars were sold in the first 6 months of 2025, matching last year's figures. Meanwhile, the leader in the electric vehicle segment, Tesla, has lost a third of its sales.
The number of cars sold in Europe decreased by 5.1% in June, with Italy seeing a drop of 17% and France a decrease of 6.7%. However, demand for electric vehicles has increased by 25%, but Tesla has lost 33% of its sales. At the same time, Volkswagen has taken the lead in electric car sales.
The most popular cars in Europe have become urban hatchbacks and compact crossovers, with the Dacia Sandero leading in sales, even surpassing the Tesla Model Y. Volkswagen remains the largest automaker in the region, while Stellantis and the Renault Group are attempting to catch up.
Summary
In the first half of 2025, car sales in Europe remain stable compared to the previous year. Sales of electric cars are growing, but Tesla is losing its previous leadership due to competition in the market. Volkswagen remains at the forefront of automakers, while some cars, like the Dacia Sandero, are becoming increasingly popular among European consumers.
