Locust Threatens Crop Yields in Southern Ukraine: What Farmers Can Expect in Spring

According to inkorr.com: In the Dnipropetrovsk region and southern Ukraine, locusts have become active, which could pose a serious problem as spring approaches. Currently, the eggs of these insects are in the soil, and with rising temperatures, they could begin mass reproduction, threatening the harvest.

Scientists advise farmers to monitor the situation to timely detect locust eggs. This year, eggs have already been laid in the Dnipropetrovsk region, and they will winter over, turning into larvae in the fall.

“Locust larvae go through several stages of development in 35-45 days and transform into adults. They eat leaves, stems, flowers, and fruits, destroying crops over large areas. Adult locusts can consume food equal to their own weight daily and travel tens of kilometers,” emphasizes the State Service for Food Safety and Consumer Protection.

Difficulties in Locust Control Due to Weather Conditions

This year, due to heat and drought, locusts are actively developing in southern Ukraine. Experts call for constant monitoring of these insects and timely localization of their breeding sites to avoid significant losses.

Efforts to fight locusts are complicated by restrictions on aerial flights and insufficient monitoring in several areas. Farmers need to make efforts locally to reduce the risk of mass insect reproduction in spring.

With the arrival of spring, an active resurgence of locusts could occur, threatening crops and potentially leading to serious losses for the agricultural sector. Therefore, monitoring the spread of this harmful insect is an extremely important task for Ukrainian farmers and the authorities, who must ensure proper monitoring and support in the fight against locusts.
