According to ТСН: Republican Senator Lindsey Graham believes that the communist regime in Cuba is doomed to collapse due to the fall of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro. In his opinion, the loss of Venezuelan oil and increased pressure from Washington make changes in Havana only a matter of time.

“There is no chance that the communist dictatorship in Cuba will survive after Maduro is removed. It’s over; it’s just a matter of time,” Graham said on Fox News during the Sunday Night in America program.

US President Donald Trump also noted that the authorities in Cuba are “ready to fall” as Cuba, being an ally of Venezuela, indeed depends on oil supplies from that country.

Trump added that American oil companies intend to take control of the largest oil reserves in the world in Venezuela after Maduro's removal.

The communist authorities in Cuba have ruled for over 60 years, starting with Fidel Castro's era. According to Human Rights Watch, in 2024 the regime continues to suppress any forms of dissent and public criticism as the country faces a serious economic crisis.

Miguel Díaz-Canel became the President of Cuba in 2021, replacing Raúl Castro. Shortly after, the country was engulfed by mass protests triggered by shortages of food and medicines amidst the pandemic.

The Regime in Cuba “Should Be Concerned”

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, whose parents emigrated from Cuba during the rule of Fulgencio Batista, also emphasized that the Cuban regime “should be concerned” after Maduro's removal.

“It’s very similar [to Venezuela] in the sense that we want to help the people of Cuba, but we also want to help those that were forced to leave Cuba and are living in this country,” Rubio stressed.

According to Pew Research Center data, in 2021 approximately 2.4 million people of Cuban descent lived in the US, with over 60% residing in Florida.

The Cuban authorities condemned the detention of Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, calling it a “criminal act.” Trump also pointed out that elections in Venezuela will not take place for at least 30 days because the country needs “treatment,” and the recovery process may take up to 18 months. He emphasized that Washington is not waging war against the country, but only against drug traffickers and criminals, and the costs of stabilization are planned to be covered by Venezuelan oil. Trump confirmed cooperation with interim president Delcy Rodriguez but warned of the possibility of renewed military action if Caracas refuses to comply with US demands.

Events in Cuba are attracting increasing attention from the international community, as the country finds itself at a crossroads due to internal and external challenges. In particular, Maduro's fall could fundamentally change the political landscape of the region, impacting Cuba's position and relations with the US. Many experts are concerned about the potential consequences for human rights and democracy on the island in the future.
