At Ramstein Summit, Zelenskyy Reports Daily Russian Strikes on Ukraine, Including the Lavra Monastery.
Russia’s Assaults on Ukraine and Kyiv’s Countermeasures
According to UATV: Speaking at the Ukraine Defense Contact Group meeting in the Ramstein format on June 18, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy detailed the relentless daily bombardments by Russian forces across Ukraine, specifically targeting the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra monastery. He condemned the strike on this historic religious site as a crime against humanity.
During his address in Brussels, Zelenskyy highlighted that Russian troops continue to inflict damage on vital cultural and religious landmarks. The Kyiv Pechersk Lavra, one of Christianity’s most revered sites, was hit by Russian drones. The president also outlined Ukraine’s retaliatory actions.
“Of course, we are preparing our responses to such Russian attacks,” Zelenskyy stated.
Domestic Pressures in Russia and Broader International Fallout
Zelenskyy updated the group on Russia’s internal struggles, including fuel shortages and a decline in federal budget revenues. He emphasized that
“Putin is not stopping this war. He insists on continuing it,”underscoring Moscow’s resolve to sustain its aggression. In response to these threats, Ukraine’s defense forces launched a massive strike on the Moscow Oil Refinery, signaling their readiness to take active measures in defending the nation.
Zelenskyy’s remarks underscore the severity of a conflict where Russian attacks increasingly target cultural and religious sites. Striking a landmark like the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra reflects Moscow’s strategy to not only degrade military infrastructure but also undermine Ukrainian morale. At the same time, Ukraine’s forceful responses demonstrate its determination to protect both its territory and cultural heritage. These developments could significantly shape international support for Ukraine, as assaults on cultural treasures draw global attention to the war’s devastating toll.
