Even All US Patriot Missiles Won't Be Enough: Ukraine Faces a Critical Air Defense Shortage.

Patriot Missile Supplies Fall Short

According to Novyny.live: Experts highlight that US deliveries of Patriot missiles are insufficient for Ukraine's missile defense, as Russia produces them at a much faster rate. Every month, Russia manufactures up to 113 missiles, including:

  • up to 60 'Iskander-M' ballistic missiles,
  • around 40 missiles for S-300 and S-400 systems,
  • up to 10 'Kinzhal' missiles, and
  • up to 3 'Zircon' missiles.

In contrast, US-based Lockheed Martin produced roughly 620 PAC-3 MSE missiles in 2025, averaging only about 50 units per month.

A Comprehensive Approach Is Essential

Planned increases in PAC-3 MSE production to 700–750 missiles annually will not resolve the issue. As experts note,

“Patriot interceptor missiles cannot be a silver bullet, because even if the US transferred every PAC-3 MSE it produces, there still wouldn't be enough, making other systems necessary.”

This underscores that Ukraine will face a missile deficit even with maximum US shipments.

Consequently, a comprehensive air defense strategy is needed. This includes targeting missile launchers, storage depots, and production facilities inside Russia. Additionally, Ukraine is negotiating with the US to obtain licenses for manufacturing Patriot air defense systems, which could significantly boost its defensive capabilities in this area.

This situation highlights the importance of strategic defense planning for Ukraine, as the need for additional air defense assets becomes increasingly urgent. Given current challenges, Ukraine must not only rely on foreign supplies but also develop its own production capacity to ensure national security.
