NBU to Release Gold Coin Featuring Archangel Michael and Symbols of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
According to ТСН: The National Bank of Ukraine has presented a new commemorative gold coin with a denomination of 20 UAH, dedicated to Archangel Michael. The design of the coin combines a classic religious image with modern defense symbols, such as the 'pixel' pattern and silhouettes of AFU fighters.
'Traditionally, we conclude another numismatic year with the release of a commemorative coin dedicated to Archangel Michael,' the bank's statement noted.
During the full-scale invasion, the image of Archangel Michael gained particular popularity in Ukraine, especially among warriors, both men and women. This is connected with the belief in him as the heavenly patron of all who fight for truth and justice.
Design and Characteristics of the Coin
This year, the NBU is releasing a commemorative coin that has been well-received by Ukrainians, but now — in gold. The coin has a denomination of 20 UAH and is made of 900 gold.
The obverse side of the coin is adorned with a laurel wreath of victory against the backdrop of the legendary Ukrainian 'pixel' (MM-14). On the reverse, the central figure of Archangel Michael is surrounded by modern images of Ukrainian resistance: silhouettes of AFU fighters, helicopters, and anti-tank hedgehogs. Completing the artistic composition is a quote by Taras Shevchenko from the poem 'Haida'maky,' engraved in the font of Vasyl Chebanik:
'...for us and the souls of the righteous, and the strength of Archangel Michael.'
Circulation and Purchase Options
The circulation of the coin will be up to 10,000 units. It will be available for purchase starting January 2026 in the NBU's online numismatic shop and at distributing banks.
It should be noted that the NBU previously announced a new series of circulation commemorative coins 'We Are Strong. We Are Together' with a denomination of 10 UAH, dedicated to Crimea, Donetsk, and Luhansk. This initiative was timed to coincide with the anniversary of the All-Ukrainian referendum in 1991 as a symbol of territorial integrity and resilience of the regions that were the first to experience Russian aggression.
The gold coin dedicated to Archangel Michael has become a bright symbol of faith and hope for Ukrainians, especially in times of uncertainty. It not only reinforces spiritual values but also demonstrates the population's readiness to defend its future. The release of this coin continues the tradition of celebrating domestic history and cultural heritage, contributing to the development of numismatic interest in Ukraine.
