Ukraine's Central Bank Issues Commemorative Coins for Three War-Affected Regions.
New Commemorative Coins Enter Circulation
According to Novyny.live: The National Bank of Ukraine (NBU) has issued new commemorative coins to honor three regions that have suffered significantly from the ongoing Russian aggression. These 10-hryvnia coins, which entered circulation on February 24, 2026, are dedicated to the Zaporizhzhia, Kharkiv, and Kherson oblasts. This release is part of a broader effort to acknowledge the resilience of Ukrainian communities during a prolonged conflict.
Coin Specifications and Banknote Updates
Each coin has a face value of 10 UAH and is minted from a zinc alloy with a nickel coating. The NBU plans to produce 2 million pieces of each regional coin. The design elements are intended to highlight their symbolic importance:
- The obverse (front) is identical to the standard 10-hryvnia circulation coin introduced in 2018;
- The reverse (back) features a stylized map of Ukraine with the administrative borders of the three highlighted regions clearly outlined.
In a related move to modernize the currency, the National Bank will also release updated 200-hryvnia banknotes on February 25, 2026. Concurrently, older 1, 2, 5, and 10-hryvnia banknotes from the 2003-2007 series will be withdrawn from circulation starting March 2, 2026. These changes reflect the NBU's ongoing strategy to refresh the nation's monetary system in response to current economic realities.
“The issuance of commemorative coins for the affected regions is a significant step in honoring the resilience and courage of Ukrainians during difficult times.” - National Bank of Ukraine
Beyond their commemorative function, these coins are seen as a tool for fostering national unity by reminding citizens of the shared challenges the country faces. The parallel update of banknotes demonstrates the central bank's commitment to adapting the financial system to contemporary needs, a crucial process for economic stability and post-war recovery.
