Defying Medical Odds: The Wartime Surgeries Saving Ukrainian Soldiers.

According to UATV: Ukraine's Medical Workers' Day honors the extraordinary sacrifices of healthcare professionals on the front line of a brutal war. One of the heroes celebrated is vascular surgeon Taras Kobza, who has been saving Ukrainian soldiers by performing complex surgeries amid the conflict. Kobza began his medical career as a combat medic during the 2014 Revolution of Dignity, volunteering to join Ukrainian forces and provide medical aid.

However, in 2015, a spinal injury forced him to leave the front lines. But when the full-scale war erupted on February 24, 2022, he rejoined the 66th Mobile Hospital. The early months were extremely grueling. Kobza recalls:

“We would spend days driving between Zelenopillia, Bakhmut, and Pokrovsk — 200 to 300 kilometers a day on Donbas roads, sometimes with the risk of accidentally entering a dangerous zone.”

During his service, he has performed hundreds of complex surgeries, some of which were considered nearly impossible. “Counting how much we slept was impossible. Sometimes you could fall asleep standing up, wake up, and not even realize you had dozed off. We slept literally half an hour or an hour at a time. I constantly lived with the thought: will I be able to handle the next wounded soldier? But over time, it became clear that we were really doing everything very well,” Kobza says.

The Crucial Contribution of Healthcare Professionals

Among his achievements, a particularly notable surgery was on the superior vena cava. According to the doctor, “At that time, medical literature had almost no descriptions of successful surgical interventions for such an injury. We pressed the vein with our fingers and placed a suture. The patient survived. We also managed to save a person with an aortic wound.” Through such efforts, Taras Kobza and his team save the lives of Ukrainian soldiers, demonstrating professionalism and unwavering dedication amid war.
