Germany Tightens Customs Regulations in 2026: New Allowances and Bans for Ukrainian Travelers.
Germany’s Updated Customs Rules for 2026
According to Novyny.live: Starting in 2026, Germany enforces revised customs regulations governing the import of goods, including personal belongings, alcohol, tobacco, and other categories. These rules set duty-free limits based on the mode of travel: for those arriving by car or bus, the threshold is €300, while air and sea travelers can bring in items worth up to €430 without paying duties. Children under 15 are allowed duty-free imports valued at up to €175.
Restrictions on Imported Goods
Travelers should be aware of specific caps on tobacco and alcoholic beverages. Each individual may bring:
- up to 200 cigarettes,
- 100 cigarillos,
- 50 cigars, or 250 grams of loose tobacco.
For alcohol, the permitted quantities are:
- up to 16 liters of beer,
- a maximum of 4 liters of still wine,
- up to 2 liters of beverages with less than 22% alcohol content,
- and up to 1 liter of spirits.
The minimum age for importing alcohol and tobacco is 17.
Additionally, travelers may carry fuel equivalent to a full car tank plus 10 liters in a canister. Unprocessed diamonds require a Kimberley Process certificate for transport. High-value textiles exceeding €1,500 face restrictions, while weapons and ammunition are only permitted with proper authorization from German authorities.
Beyond these items, narcotics and prescription drugs can only be brought in with a medical certificate. Certain dog breeds considered dangerous are also banned. Several food products—including wild mushrooms, potatoes, sturgeon caviar, meat, and dairy—are strictly prohibited.
To avoid complications at the border, travelers entering Germany should familiarize themselves with these updated customs measures. These changes could significantly affect tourism and goods transportation, as a clear understanding of the rules helps prevent unexpected delays and fines. Moreover, the regulations aim to enhance security and control over specific product categories, a key priority for the state.
