Germany demands EU to ban steel imports from Russia: reasons for the sharp call

According to inkorr.com: German authorities are calling on the European Union to ban steel imports from Russia. Vice Chancellor and Minister of Economy of Germany Lars Klingbeil stated this at the 'steel summit', which will be dedicated to issues of steel imports to the EU.

'Steel slabs produced in Russia and processed in the EU are currently not subject to sanctions. It has been impossible to justify this to our steel industry why Europe still keeps the market open for Putin,' Klingbeil stated sharply.

He called for more 'European patriotism' in steel production and emphasized the necessity of using local steel in key sectors such as infrastructure and the automotive industry.

Severe crisis of the German steel industry

Among the complex challenges facing the industry are the fall in demand in automotive manufacturing, rising energy prices, and cheap imports from the USA. High tariffs on steel imports from the USA also complicate the situation. The summit on November 6 is planned to discuss solutions to overcome these challenges, including sustainability and international trade issues.

The representative of Germany stressed the importance of supporting domestic steel production and actively addressing existing problems in this sector amid a serious crisis.

This initiative to ban imports of Russian steel reflects the growing tensions in the European steel sector. By introducing new sanctions, the EU is trying to support its steel industry, which is going through tough times due to rising competition and increasing costs. Further decisions at the summit may have significant consequences for the future of the steel market in Europe.
