Norway imposes strict social media restrictions for children.
In Norway, they plan to prohibit children under 15 years old from using social media. This was stated by the country's Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre, explaining that technology companies work against young children who need to be protected from the influence of algorithms. These words are quoted by The Guardian.
Currently, in Norway, there is a restriction on the use of social media by children under 13 years old. However, according to the newspaper, this ban is not working properly: 58% of ten-year-olds and 72% of eleven-year-olds are still using social media. To make the ban more effective, authorities plan to amend local data protection laws and introduce an official age verification mechanism.
The Guardian reports that a similar restriction was introduced in Australia in September. There is no specific age threshold set there, but the minimum age will range between 14 and 16 years.
Earlier, it became known that Norway denied temporary protection to several Ukrainians who either come from 'safe' regions or did not reside in Ukraine at the Time of Russia's invasion in 2022. The Norwegian government announced strict economic measures for Ukrainians and refugees from other countries. Justice Minister Emilie Enger Mehl stated that Norway is facing a refugee crisis.
