Fresh Round of Russia-Ukraine-U.S. Talks Set for Within 10 Days Following Geneva Discussions.
Ukrainian President Meets with Negotiating Team
According to Novyny.live: On February 20, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy convened with his nation's negotiating delegation to review the outcomes of trilateral talks held in Geneva on February 17-18. Representatives from Russia, Ukraine, and the United States participated in those discussions. Zelenskyy noted that while there were constructive developments within the military subgroup, political issues—particularly those concerning eastern Ukraine—remain highly sensitive.
Key Issues Under Discussion
The political subgroup focused on matters related to the Donbas and territorial integrity. The President emphasized the lack of progress on these fronts, stating:
“In the political subgroup, the sensational questions about eastern Ukraine have come up again. Questions of Donbas, questions of territory. So far, no constructive path has been found here.”
Despite some positive movement on military matters, Zelenskyy acknowledged the reality that “the fact that no one yet sees positivity on territorial questions is also a fact; we must recognize this.”
According to reports, a new round of negotiations between the parties is scheduled to take place within the next ten days. This will provide an opportunity to continue discussions on critical humanitarian issues and other unresolved aspects. The Geneva talks underscore the ongoing conflict in eastern Ukraine, which began in 2014 and has resulted in significant loss of life and displacement. Meanwhile, the results from Geneva indicate that further work is necessary to build consensus among all participants.
This meeting highlights the continued importance of the trilateral dialogue in resolving the conflict in eastern Ukraine, where the question of territorial integrity remains paramount. The previous negotiations in Geneva suggest that, despite some successes in the military sphere, political aspects still require substantial effort to reach a compromise. The upcoming talks could prove crucial for improving the humanitarian situation and establishing greater stability in the region.
