The EU introduces new entry rules for Ukrainians: what will change from October 12
From October 12, new rules for crossing external borders will come into effect in the European Union for third-country nationals, including Ukrainians. This is related to the implementation of the Entry and Exit System (EES), which automates the recording of biometric data of travelers. This was reported by 'Glavkom' citing the Ukrainian Embassy in Poland.

According to inkorr.com: From October 12, new rules for crossing the external borders of the EU will come into force for citizens from other countries, including Ukraine. This is due to the implementation of the Entry and Exit System (EES), which replaces traditional passport stamps with electronic records. Those planning to enter the Schengen area for a short time will be required to go through this new system.

What is the EES system and who does it apply to

The EES (Entry/Exit System) is a new automated database that will contain information about crossing the border during entry and exit. The system will apply to citizens of countries that are not EU members who stay in the Schengen Area for up to 90 days. Instead of the usual passport stamps, information will be recorded in an electronic database.

Upon first entry into the EU through the EES system, travelers will be required to take a photograph, provide fingerprints (for individuals over 12 years old), and provide passport details.

Timeline for full implementation

October 12 is just the beginning of the EES operation. The full implementation of the system is scheduled for April 10, 2026, when all passport stamps will be replaced with electronic records in the database. Each EU member state will independently determine when to integrate the system at its borders.

Ukrainian refugees are also prepared to return home if safety is ensured in Ukraine and necessary political reforms are carried out. Surveys among Ukrainians in Europe show that the main priorities for return are improving the labor market situation and combating corruption.

Thus, from October 12, new rules for crossing the external borders of the EU for third-country nationals, including Ukrainians, will come into force due to the automation of the EES system. This system allows for increased control over travelers and demonstrates the aspirations of Ukrainian refugees to improve the situation in Ukraine for their return home.
