Odesa Court Sentences Man to 15 Years for Treason and Weapons Charges.
Verdict from Odesa Court
According to Novyny.live: A man has been convicted of state treason and illegal weapons possession by an Odesa court, receiving a 15-year prison sentence and confiscation of his property. The charges stemmed from his collaboration with Russian intelligence services, which led to the criminal prosecution. This case is part of Ukraine's broader legal efforts to counter espionage and internal threats during the ongoing conflict.
Case Details
According to the investigation, the convicted individual had been in contact with representatives of Russian intelligence services even before the full-scale invasion began. It was established that in early 2022, he photographed and documented the locations of Ukrainian Armed Forces checkpoints, fortifications, and units in Odesa. During a search, law enforcement officers discovered a significant arsenal of weapons:
- A Kalashnikov AK-74 assault rifle
- A Makarov pistol
- A pump-action shotgun
- Over one thousand rounds of ammunition
- Casings for F-1 and RG-42 grenades
The seized weapons and ammunition were subsequently transferred for use by the Ukrainian Armed Forces.
The court also ordered the man to pay over 104,000 hryvnias to cover the costs of expert examinations conducted during the trial. Throughout the investigation, he claimed that law enforcement officials had pressured him, but the court found this did not provide grounds for altering the sentence. The confiscation of his property underscores the severity of the crimes. Such cases highlight the critical importance of protecting national security in wartime and demonstrate the state's resolve in punishing those who threaten its sovereignty.
The sentence handed down by the Odesa court reflects the ongoing efforts of Ukrainian law enforcement to combat state treason and collaboration with the aggressor state.
Allegations of pressure from the accused, while not uncommon in high-stakes security trials, do not change the fundamental nature of the offenses for which he was convicted.
