Changes in support for Ukrainian refugees in Slovakia

Slovakia will reduce assistance for Ukrainian refugees arriving after February 2025.

According to the new rules, starting from March 1, 2025, individuals who have been granted Ukrainian refugee status after February 28, 2025, will be able to stay in shelters for only 60 days, which is half of the current 120 days. Housing assistance will also be limited to the first two-month period only. Exceptions will be made for vulnerable groups: pensioners over 65 years old, children under five years old, and single guardians of such children.

Government representatives assert that the new measures will help save 2 million euros amid the increasing burden on the state budget.

Slovakia's Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs Peter Krauspe emphasized that most Ukrainian refugees find work and housing within the first two months of their stay in the country. 'Savings must be made where possible,' he noted.

Meanwhile, the opposition sharply criticized these changes, stating that they are excessive, as neighboring countries continue to provide support for up to 90 days. Lawmakers also accused the government of a lack of transparency and consultation during the decision-making process.
